What is a disc injury?

Discs are the cushions between the bones of your spine. Each has a tough outer ring and a softer center. With strain or wear, the disc can bulge, or the center can push through the outer ring (a herniation). A disc that presses on a nearby nerve can cause pain down the arm or leg.

Common symptoms

  • Back or neck pain that's worse with sitting or bending
  • Pain, tingling, or numbness down an arm or leg
  • Pain that's worse with coughing or sneezing
  • Weakness in the arm, hand, leg, or foot

How we treat it

We test your movement, strength, and nerves to understand which disc is involved and how. Then we build a plan that can include:

  • Spinal decompression on our Triton table or Back On Trac chair to gently take pressure off the disc
  • Chiropractic care and soft tissue work to ease pain and restore motion
  • Corrective exercises that support the spine and help prevent another flare-up

Where we see you

Questions

What happens at the first visit?

We talk through your history and check how you move to find the source of the problem, then explain what's going on and your options. New patient visits take about 45 to 60 minutes.

Do I need an MRI first?

Usually not. Most disc injuries can be assessed with a careful exam. If your exam points to something that needs imaging or a specialist, we'll tell you and help you get it.

When should I see a medical doctor instead?

Go to the emergency room if you lose bladder or bowel control, have numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or weakness in an arm or leg that's getting worse quickly.

Is chiropractic care covered by insurance?

We accept Medicare, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Tricare, and many more, plus workers' compensation and auto accident claims. Call us and we'll check your benefits before you start.

Do I need a referral?

No referral needed. You can book directly with Dr. Covert online or by phone.
