What causes back pain?

Most back pain comes from the muscles, joints, and discs of the lower back being strained or not moving well. It often builds up over time from sitting, lifting, or weak core and hip muscles, then flares up with one wrong move.

  • Muscle strains from lifting, twisting, or a sudden movement
  • Stiff or irritated joints in the lower back
  • Disc problems, which can also cause pain down the leg
  • Long hours sitting and weak core and hip muscles

Common symptoms

  • A dull ache or sharp pain in the lower back
  • Stiffness getting out of bed or up from a chair
  • Pain that gets worse with sitting, bending, or lifting
  • Muscle spasms

How we treat it

We start with a thorough exam to find the source of your pain. Then we build a plan that can include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments to restore motion in stiff joints
  • Soft tissue work to release tight, painful muscles
  • Focused shockwave therapy for stubborn muscle and tendon pain
  • Spinal decompression when a disc is involved
  • Corrective exercises that strengthen your core and hips so the pain doesn't keep coming back

Where we see you

We have two offices, both inside Parkway Athletic Club and open to everyone, no gym membership needed. South Reno is on Double Diamond Parkway, close to Damonte Ranch and South Meadows. Sparks is on East Lincoln Way, near The Outlets at Legends.

What patients say

★★★★★
“Hands down the best chiropractor I've ever been to. I came in with chronic back pain, and within a few weeks he helped completely resolve the issue. He's incredibly knowledgeable and truly passionate about his patients. I would 100% recommend coming here, especially if nothing else has worked. I've spent thousands on doctors, specialists, imaging, and physical therapy with no results—this was the only thing that actually helped.”

Questions

What happens at the first visit?

We talk through your history and check how you move to find the source of the problem, then explain what's going on and your options. New patient visits take about 45 to 60 minutes.

Does an adjustment hurt?

Most people feel little to no discomfort. Some feel mild soreness for a day or so afterward, similar to after a workout. We always explain what we're doing first, and gentler options are available.

When should I see a medical doctor instead?

Go to the emergency room if back pain comes with loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or leg weakness that's getting worse. See a medical doctor first if your pain follows a major fall or accident, or comes with a fever or unexplained weight loss.

Is chiropractic care covered by insurance?

We accept Medicare, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Tricare, and many more, plus workers' compensation and auto accident claims. Call us and we'll check your benefits before you start.

Do I need a referral?

No referral needed. You can book directly with Dr. Covert online or by phone.
