What is whiplash?
Whiplash happens when your head is thrown forward and back quickly, like in a rear-end collision. The sudden motion can strain the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the neck and upper back. It can also happen from falls and contact sports.
Common symptoms
- Neck pain and stiffness, often worse the next day
- Headaches starting at the base of the skull
- Pain between the shoulder blades or in the lower back
- Tingling or numbness in the arms
- Dizziness, fatigue, or trouble concentrating
How we treat it
We take a careful history of the accident and examine your neck and back before starting any treatment. Care starts gently and builds as you heal, and can include:
- Gentle chiropractic adjustments to restore motion
- Soft tissue work to calm tight, guarded muscles
- Corrective exercises that rebuild neck strength and control
Where we see you
We have two offices, both inside Parkway Athletic Club and open to everyone, no gym membership needed. South Reno is on Double Diamond Parkway, close to Damonte Ranch and South Meadows. Sparks is on East Lincoln Way, near The Outlets at Legends.
Questions
Should I see a medical doctor first?
Yes, after any car accident get checked by a medical doctor or at the emergency room first to rule out serious injury. Go right away for severe neck pain, numbness or weakness, a bad headache, confusion, or vomiting. Once serious injury is ruled out, we can help with your recovery.
My pain didn't start until days later. Is that normal?
Yes. Whiplash symptoms often appear or get worse over the first few days after an accident. It's still worth getting checked.
Do you accept car insurance?
Yes, we accept auto accident insurance claims. Let us know when you book that you were in an accident, and bring your claim information to your first visit.
What happens at the first visit?
We talk through your history and check how you move to find the source of the problem, then explain what's going on and your options. New patient visits take about 45 to 60 minutes.
Do I need a referral?
No referral needed. You can book directly with Dr. Covert online or by phone.
