Muscle knots, trigger points, and strains

A trigger point, often called a muscle knot, is a tight, tender spot in a muscle. Pressing on it can cause pain in another area, like a knot in the upper shoulder that causes a headache. A muscle strain is when muscle fibers are overstretched or torn, usually during a sudden movement or heavy effort.

Common symptoms

  • A tight, tender lump in a muscle
  • Pain that spreads from the knot to another area
  • Stiffness and a limited range of motion
  • Pain, tightness, or weakness in a muscle after a strain

How we treat it

We find the muscles involved and what's overloading them. Then we build a plan that can include:

  • Focused shockwave therapy aimed precisely at trigger points and injured muscle
  • Soft tissue work to release tight muscles
  • Corrective exercises that restore strength and flexibility so the knots don't keep coming back

Questions

Does shockwave therapy hurt?

Richard Wolf, the maker of our PiezoWave2T, describes the treatment as gentle and for the most part pain-free. Most people feel a firm tapping, and we adjust the intensity to your comfort. No needles or anesthesia.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually 3 to 6 sessions, each about 10 to 20 minutes. Dr. Covert will map out your plan at your first visit based on your exam.

When should I see a medical doctor instead?

See a medical doctor for a muscle injury with a large bruise, a visible gap or bulge in the muscle, or if you can't use the muscle at all. A painful, swollen, red calf can be a blood clot and needs urgent care.

Is shockwave covered by insurance?

Shockwave therapy isn't covered by insurance. Call us for current pricing, and we'll go over the cost before you start.
