What is Achilles tendinitis?
The Achilles tendon connects your calf muscles to your heel bone. It's the strongest tendon in the body, but repeated strain can overload it, causing pain, stiffness, and sometimes a thickened, tender spot. It can hurt in the middle of the tendon or right where it attaches to the heel.
Common symptoms
- Pain and stiffness at the back of the heel or just above it
- Stiffness that's worst in the morning
- Pain at the start of activity that may ease, then return afterward
- A tender or thickened spot on the tendon
What causes it
- A sudden jump in running, hiking, or jumping
- Running hills or changing to a new shoe
- Tight or weak calves
- Age, since tendons recover more slowly over time
How we treat it
We check your ankle, calf, and how you move to find what's overloading the tendon. Then we build a plan around three steps:
- Focused shockwave therapy to restart healing in the tendon
- Soft tissue work on the calf to ease tension
- A gradual calf strengthening plan and guidance on returning to running or sport
Where we see you

Questions
Does shockwave therapy hurt?
Richard Wolf, the maker of our PiezoWave2T, describes the treatment as gentle and for the most part pain-free. Most people feel a firm tapping, and we adjust the intensity to your comfort. No needles or anesthesia.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually 3 to 6 sessions, each about 10 to 20 minutes. Dr. Covert will map out your plan at your first visit based on your exam.
When should I see a medical doctor instead?
If you felt a sudden pop or snap, or it felt like someone kicked the back of your leg, and now you can't push off or stand on your toes, see a medical doctor right away. That can be a torn Achilles, which needs urgent care.
Is shockwave covered by insurance?
Shockwave therapy isn't covered by insurance. Call us for current pricing, and we'll go over the cost before you start.
